Powder Room Design: Moody, Modern & Inspired by Palms

i’m a bit smitten with this modern powder room design we just completed for a super smart (and totally cool) techie couple in the east bay. Not only is their style right up my alley, but the transformation from a total white box to moody, modern, and comfortable — ahhhh. pure joy!

But let me back things up and start at the beginning…

The Backstory

last year, our clients, C. and M., decided to Leave city life in San Francisco and move out to the suburbs. They found a great neighborhood and purchased a new development home.

The inside spaces were all fresh and new, white and boxy, and very little character. but it was like a blank CANVAS!

Making a Plan

While it’s true that we manage our clients’ projects from concept to completion. we always spend some quality time together upfront. Whenever we start working with new clients, we have to get to know them, understand how they will use the space, and explore their style and goals.

This upfront time together is essential for ensuring we can design well for you and represent your best interests authentically throughout the project. (We’re never just doing our own thing, we’re on your team.)

For this project in particular, our clients knew they wanted something modern yet lively and comfortable. We agreed that a subtle “beachy” element would be perfect. JUST as an undercurrent that would bring relaxing, almost vacation vibes to the space.

At this point in the project, we coined the hashtag #modernwithasplashofbeach, but I hadn’t created the full design concept yet.

SERENDIPITY

It’s worth mentioning I receive tons of samples from vendors every week (from paint to fabrics to tiles to wallcoverings…). Many of them end up on my desk, especially if I think they have potential for any current projects.

Well, I was sitting at said desk one day and considering C. and M.’s powder room, VOILA! my eyes caught on a sample that I hadn’t noticed before from Eskayel, a New York design firm that specializes in textiles and woven wallcoverings that are legitimate works of art.

Stunning, right?! I saw it and immediately thought - THIS IS PERFECT! We shared it with our clients, who loved it, and it all went from there...

Modern & Moody Palm-Inspired Powder room design

Remember that white box of a powder room? Here’s what it looks like now…

Ahhh… This space is now so perfect and inviting. The black trim of the mirror and the matte black hardware work together to help the darker accents in the woven palm wallcovering pop! We were able to save money and make a big impact by painting the existing vanity a shade of deep olive green - it helps recede into the wall and make the space feel deeper.

The linen Roman shade with fawn-colored banding brings an organic, comfortable feel to the space. The natural material complements the palm pattern and offsets the moody colors perfectly. I also selected an oblong-shaped mirror to help raise the perceived height of the room. And if you look down…

...the floor tile is SO COOL. It’s actually wood but coated in resin, so it’s completely water resistant. The texture is unique and the overall look is something you really don’t see much. Hello, one-of-a-kind!

Wrap-Up & Inspiration

I LOVED this project, Largely because we transformed a white space into a beautiful place that became a home. The choices we made felt so personal to the homeowners and we made the rooms feel more like THEM! It’s also a blast to use a woven palm wallcovering!

Just because we can… here are a couple more spaces with palm and/or wallcovering inspiration.

Who said foliage had to be green? Loving this combination of moody yet relaxing palm leaves, deep navy subway tile, and a geometric mirror.

Admittedly, this powder room’s wallcovering leaves the natural world and enters the abstract, but it is no less beautiful and inspiring! (Kind of reminds me of a rorschach test! the fun kind.)

I hope this project has given you inspiration and motivation. Living in a home designed for your lifestyle and with your style and personality in mind makes life feel beautiful and effortless.

If you’re ready to make some impactful changes in your own home (without pausing your life to get them), let’s talk, my friend.

Yours,
Susie
