From Garage to Living Space: Process & Inspiration

I can't even put into words how excited I am about this garage renovation. I think my husband and I have been planning this beast of a project for FIVE YEARS, which feels like an eternity, but hey, sometimes that’s how long it takes. Which is why I’ve been dying to say this… this project is finally underway!!

Today I want to introduce you to the space, our goals, and some of the inspiration I’ve been putting together for a space that is going to be a big part of our lives. Come on in and watch your step. ;)

Welcome to the scene of big, beautiful things to come!

Let’s talk about this garage situation…

I won’t sugarcoat it, the garage was becoming a liability. With all the rain last winter, you couldn't even store things in there. Rats were making their way in. Mold began a slow but steady takeover of our stored item. Even the structure was rotting. I can’t make this stuff up – this is real life, people!

Long story short, it was super gross and way overdue for some attention.

Making the best design decisions for our needs

When designing any space, my first step is ALWAYS to talk about how the space is going to be used. This means how you currently use it and your goals for using it in the future.

For us, the huz and I went back and forth on what we wanted and how the space would be designed. We eventually agreed to make it an ADU (accessory dwelling unit) so that someone like an au pair or aging grandparent could move in if need be.

If you know anything about converting a garage to an ADU (especially one with fun stuff like mold), you know that a project like this requires a lot of construction. A lot of construction also means a lot of involvement with the city. We had to make sure the structure is to code, following all the rules and regulations, etc.

This has been a heavily involved phase but surprisingly fun for us. As the walls get framed and the rooms start taking shape, I see the dreams of five years past starting to come to life! And yes, it is well worth the noise, the mess, and all the things that need attention. Completely worth it.

I'm also SO excited because my amazing contractor pointed out that we can make a loft above the bathroom and a den for more storage or little kid hideaways! Yep, little kid hideaways for these two!!!

Features I’m pretty pumped about

  • It’s very own bathroom

  • Storage space that could work as a bedroom

  • A fully functioning kitchen

  • Open recreation space

  • A LOFT!! This will be great additional storage but could also function as a place for a snooze or a play/hideaway space. So cool!

  • Space for a den with storage

  • Little kid hideaways for Penny and Reese!!!!

Not your average garage, amiright?

It’s aliiiiiiive!!!

You know why we’re here… let’s talk design inspiration.

KITCHEN INSPIRATION

For designing a small kitchen, I sourced some images of airstream renovations for ideas. I loved this one!!

DEN & STORAGE SPACE

The flooring for the storage space will be this adorable tile from Clé tile. I love its country, classic feel. Adds a feminine touch to a storage space. :)

BATHROOM INSPIRATION

The bathroom has gone through a few iterations, and I’m still deciding on options. Which is your favorite combination?

Tile Option 1: Blue backsplash with white penny tile floor and shower

Tile Option 2: Brick backsplash and fancy black and white floor

Tile Option 3: White tile shower and grey hex floor and bath

Which tile option is your favorite?? Tell me in the comments below + stay tuned for more to come on this renovation!

Susie
