4 American Companies to Love for High-Quality Furnishings

It doesn’t have to be 4th of July weekend to support American companies who are creating beautiful things and serving our communities well, right? There are so many reasons to love our local furniture brands — especially the ones I’m sharing with you today.

Before I spill the deets on my top 4 choices for American makers, let’s talk about why buying local is a smart investment. If you already know all this, skip ahead, smartypants. ;)

4 Reasons to Buy Local, American-Made Furnishings

1. It’s Faster

Not only does ordering locally cut out the middlemen in the supply chain, but it also means your item does not need several weeks or months of travel time. Plus, have you noticed that everything in the home industry is in high demand (and on backorder) these days? Ordering locally may just expedite your item’s arrival.

2. It Lowers Your Carbon Footprint

Think about it… if your furniture doesn’t have to book a ticket on a cargo ship, fly over an ocean, or hitch a transcontinental ride on a semi truck… that’s a lot of energy and emissions saved. If your carbon footprint is important to you, this one’s a no-brainer.

3. The Quality is Often Better

Although there’s no guarantee that every American-made furniture company uses high-quality materials and craftsmanship, in general, the quality is better than you will find in less expensive furnishings created abroad. Local companies are often able to be hands-on throughout the entire furniture making process, resulting in a more considered and curated product.

4. It Supports Our Local Economy

It should come as no surprise that by supporting American-made furniture makers, you’re pouring your well-earned cash into supporting our economy. This is more important than ever, as most local businesses have had to make many difficult sacrifices over the past 2 years. So if we’re able to support them by purchasing something beautiful and well-made, why not?? Exactly.

Alright, let’s talk about 4 American furniture companies that I love, and after reading about them… you probably will, too. ;)

1. Moss Studio

Based out of Los Angeles, Moss Studio has been a family-owned handmade furniture company since 1989. With high-quality upholstery and beautiful fabrics, their products are easy to love. They’re the perfect choice for clean and modern coastal vibes, making it obvious to understand why I love it. They also have some edgy pieces if you’re feeling dangerous. ;)

Known for being stylish, super comfortable, and extremely durable, Moss Studio hand makes every piece to order. Starting with the frame construction, all the way to the details of seams and stitching. By purchasing from Moss, you’re bringing home quality workmanship… an actual labor of love! Check them out on Insta for some awe-inspiring behind-the-scenes footage.

2. Urban Electric Co.

For timeless yet modern lighting, Urban Electric Co. has the best selection. Their original designs are bench-made and hand-finished on the east coast in the charming city of Charleston, SC. Not only is their quality incredible, but their customer service is unrivaled.

I actually had the pleasure of working directly with Urban Electric Co. to create custom lighting for our beverage center (above right). I selected their Rex Flushmount and customized the color to match the coastal blue wallpaper. Simple yet brimming with detail and texture. Urban Electric Co. also offers the amazing ability to customize lampshades or backplates with any custom color or wallpaper. Hello, creativity.

3. O&G Studio

This Rhode Island based studio has done an incredible job reinventing a true American classic — wooden furniture. With traditional and timeless designs, O&G Studio offers hand-built furniture, lighting, and hardware. Known for their excellent quality and timeless beauty, I trust O&G furniture to withstand the test of time.

Best of all? The environmentally-conscious company uses sustainable American hardwoods and repurposed materials whenever possible. They’ve even used aged recycled railroad tracks and cast iron machinery legs to craft some of their metal pieces. Amazing, right?!

4. Verellen

Hand-crafted in the furniture capital of the world (High Point, NC, in case you didn’t know), Verellen’s stunning upholstery and rich textures effortlessly bring timeless sophistication into your home. By using clean lines, authentic materials, and forgivable fabrics, you can have the reassurance that this furniture is built to last… even in a home with kiddos running around. Like mine.

With hand-tied frames from sustainably sourced lumber, recycled metal coils, and plant-based foam cushions, this company is also committed to being environmentally friendly. Their furniture is absolutely gorgeous, boasting modern and funky designs that can fit a variety of approachable yet unique homes. LOVE it.
