5 Reasons to Love Marble (& Where to Use It)
Think about standing in front of the breathtaking Taj Mahal in India, tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain in Rome, or feeling small beside massive colonnades at the Parthenon in Athens. What do all 3 of these landmarks have in common? Marble.
Constructed centuries (even millennia) ago, these places still maintain gorgeous and luxurious character. Isn’t that remarkable?! In my opinion, marble (and some TLC, of course) is to thank. Even better? Your home doesn’t need to be ancient to experience the ageless sophistication and luxury of marble, too.
Today, I’m sharing all the reasons to love this chic, natural stone, along with our fav ways to use it throughout your modern home. Let’s take a look…
1. Every Slab of Marble is One of a Kind
Because every slab comes directly from nature, no two are alike. This means that you (or your designer) has the ability to hand-select the perfect piece for your space. The composition of veining and hues are like a work of art — one you won’t find in your neighbor’s house.
2. Marble Gets More Beautiful with Age
Natural in its aging process, the appeal of marble is something that man-made products just can’t duplicate. Like a fine wine, it only gets better with age. Color, distinctive natural veining, and markings in each slab can vary, essentially giving you a one-of-a-kind, fresh, and elegant feeling in your home. Who doesn’t want that?!
Note: Since marble is porous, stains will occur with spills, so proper sealing and recurrent polishing are great ways to counteract this problem. But truthfully? I suggest giving yourself some freedom and letting your marble live a little. The natural patina becomes part of its character.
3. Marble Brings in a Touch of the Outdoors
Because marble is a gift from Mother Nature herself, its unique texture and color variation really brings an organic, outdoorsy vibe that creates depth and interest into any space. Using this timeless material is a great way to amp up the level of natural sophistication in your home while keeping the vibe effortless and tasteful. I have to say… I’d love to linger a little longer in this kitchen!
4. Marble Adds Instant Luxury
Ahhh…an exclusive spa in my very own home. Yes, please! To infuse my bathroom with luxury, I used white Carrara marble on the floors, walls, and shower. Because why not?! I adore how the classic and versatile nature of marble infuses this space with a sense of peace that instantly feels like a retreat, all while melting the worries of the day away.
5. Marble Offers Life-Long Durability
Working with marble means that your home will stand the test of time…just look at Rome! With care, those marble statues and colonnades are still looking great after two thousand years. Install it in your home, and you’ll have a fixed element that will last forever...and that adds value!
Where to Use Marble in a Modern-Day Home
You’re ready to use marble in your home, but this isn’t ancient Rome — so where should you put it? Here are a few ideas…
In the bathroom: Using marble in the bathroom is a great option because you don’t usually have to worry about staining, and the luminous quality will actually make your space appear larger. Win, win! Use it for walls, floors, countertops…you name it.
In the kitchen: Looking for the perfect way to transform your kitchen? Add a fab stand-out marble island or an enduring marble backsplash. Trust me, you don’t regret it. Just know that marble doesn’t mingle well with acids (like citrus or tomato), so be sure to wipe up spills right away!
As a fireplace surround: Marble’s strength, longevity, shatter-resistance, and heat-resistance make it the perfect choice around a fireplace..and there is no limit to the size, shape, and styles you can find. Hello, focal point.
As entryway flooring: Grand entrance? Ohhhh, yes. A stunning marble entryway makes a statement and sets the tone of your home, not to mention that it will endure many, many years of guests.
Accessories: For pops of elegance throughout your home, consider adding marble furnishings and accessories, like bowls, vases, end tables, and decorative objects. A little marble can go a long way, and before you know it, you’ll be ready for that brand-new countertop. ;)
